The POPsicle Recipes: Barb and Star’s Hotdog Soup

This week on The POPsicle podcast, Ryno and I discuss the zany and campy film Barb and Star Go to Vista del Mar and how much we absolutely loved it. When coming up with a recipe, I went back to one of the early scenes, when Barb and Star get kicked out of their “Talking Club” even though they made dinner - hotdog soup!

I took a basic ham-and-bean soup and swapped honeybaked ham for… Franks. Here it is! The verdict was “it’s fine” but hey - you can’t beat how economical this recipe is! And yes, I did spruce it up a bit so it felt fancy.

  1. In a pot, saute onions, garlic, carrots, and celery until softened, 5 minutes in medium heat

  2. Add hotdogs and saute until cooked, 3 minutes

  3. Add one half of beans and cook

  4. Season with italian seasoning, salt and pepper, to taste

  5. Mash remaining beans with broth until liquid, and add to pot

  6. Bring pot to a boil, and then set heat to low and simmer for 8 minutes until soup is right consistency to your liking

  7. Serve in bowls, top with fresh cilantro or parsley

Hotdog Soup

  • 1 package hotdogs, cut into pieces

  • 1 stalk celery, cut into pieces

  • 2 medium carrots, peeled + cut into pieces

  • 2 cans great northern beans, drained and rinsed

  • 1/2 medium onion, diced

  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped

  • Italian seasoning

  • 3 cups broth or water
